Why Airsoft is great family fun

On August 30th, Team Honeybadger from Ammohive rolled out to the field. We were just a small group – just Blake, John, Tyla, and Joe – but we spanned three generations and what we lacked in numbers, we made up for in pure momentum. 

Rain can often ground Airsoft operations, but a damp Sunday – after months of drought conditions – saw us at Skirmish in Billericay for what turned out to be an unforgettable run. 

Field Conditions & Pyro Power

A few days of rain preceding the game day meant that the wildfire risk was no longer an issue. Pyro (a pyrotechnic grenade) was fully cleared for use which made for a really exciting game. Ground dampness meant we could safely deploy smoke grenades and explosive distractors, adding a whole new layer of tactical depth to every encounter which we hadn’t been able to enjoy for months.

Gameplay Breakdown

Skirmish Billericay pulled out all the stops to make our game a memorable one, with tight game modes and exceptional marshalling. Fair play and active referees can make or break an airsoft day, and the crew on site kept the energy levels high and the hit-calling honest. 

We played three primary game types:

• ‘Capture the Alamo’ is a high-stakes game where the attackers have to destroy the defenders and capture the base. Relentless pushes from the other team forced us to burn ammo to hold them off.

• ‘Hill 60’ is a timed game which stops when one team has destroyed the other and is quickly followed by another round to see if the time can be beaten. Classic king-of-the-hill chaos where terrain control and quick flanks were our only way to survive.

• ‘Infected’ involves a group of 3 players set against everyone else; the aim is for the 3 to shoot and infect the opposers, who must then join that team. The ultimate end-of-day scramble with the team of 3 up against a huge 350 people, turning teammates into targets as the horde closed in.

The highlight of the day was watching 14-year-old Tyla eye up the smoke grenades with envy. Standing at a towering 6-foot-tall, he looks built for heavy airsoft ordnance, but field rules mean he’s got to wait until his 18th birthday to pop his first smoke. Watching a player who looks like an operator get sidelined by age limits was the running joke of the day, but he took it in good spirits.
