What is the purpose of a UKARA number or other legitimate justification for acquiring replica firearms in the UK?
UKARA (United Kingdom Airsoft Retailers Association) numbers are required to purchase Realistic Imitation Firearms (RIFs) in the UK. This is because RIFs look very similar to real firearms, and the government wants to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.
To obtain a UKARA number, you must be a member of a UKARA-registered airsoft skirmish site and have attended three games in two months. This shows that you are a genuine airsofter and that you have a legitimate reason for owning a RIF.
If you are not an Airsofter, but you need to buy a RIF for a lawful purpose, such as for a film or TV production or for reenactment purposes, you will need to provide alternative proof of your entitlement.
Here are some examples of alternative justifications:
- Membership in a recognized airsoft club or society
- Participation in a film/TV production team that requires a replica gun
- Usage for civil service purposes
- Membership in a well-established reenactment society
- Custodianship of a relevant museum
In short, a UKARA number or other legitimate justification is required to purchase a RIF in the UK to prevent it from being misused.
Is photo identification necessary for purchasing a RIF?
Absolutely. This requirement is non-negotiable. A valid photo ID must feature your picture and current address, such as a Driver’s License or Passport.
Is it possible to buy an Airsoft gun without a UKARA or defence?
Legally, you can purchase two-toned Airsoft guns if you are at least 18 years old. However, photo ID will be mandatory for any gun purchase.
How Are Guns Requiring A UKARA Determined?
In order to safeguard public safety and uphold the standing of Airsoft as both a sport and a community, we implement strict criteria for all firearms offered for sale. If there is any possibility that an Airsoft gun could be misconstrued as a genuine firearm, a UKARA is deemed necessary. This stance is unwavering, and we retain the authority to decline any transaction that fails to meet our standards.
Can I Use My Firearms Certificate As A Valid Defense for A RIF?
No, it is not. We are legally bound by the Firearms Act, which differs from the VCRA Act and has different criteria. Therefore, we cannot accept a Firearms Certificate for the purchase of Airsoft guns.
How can I acquire a RIF as a member of a Production Crew?
To demonstrate your affiliation with a production crew, provide a copy of the company’s insurance documents that specify coverage as a production company. Ensure the items are delivered to the relevant studio or an associated address.
Is a UKARA or similar defence required as a member of the Police or Armed Forces?
For personal use, you are subject to the same laws as any other individual in the UK. However, you can purchase replica guns for training purposes on behalf of your unit, provided we receive valid proof, such as an email from a superior. Training packages cannot be delivered to residential addresses and must be sent to the location of the training.
How can I demonstrate my affiliation with a reenactment society?
To prove your membership in a reenactment society, provide a scanned copy of your Membership Card alongside a Photo ID, such as a Driver’s License. Additionally, your society must have a website listing your name or a contactable representative.
How can I acquire a RIF as a museum curator?
As a museum curator, you must supply a copy of the museum’s insurance documents. The package should be delivered to the museum or an associated building.
Is it possible to face arrest or prosecution despite having a legitimate defence?
Yes, you can. Your actions after purchasing a firearm are your responsibility. Airsoft guns should never be used to harm or intimidate the public. Carrying a realistic replica weapon in public is considered a Firearms Offense and carries a minimum five-year jail sentence. Even if you have no intent to harm or intimidate, never assume that others will recognize the non-lethal nature of your weapon. When transporting your Airsoft gun, ensure it is securely stored in a case in the trunk of your car.
If the police stop you and discover a realistic-looking replica weapon in your vehicle, do not assume that they are aware of Airsoft. Calmly explain the nature of the sport, why the weapon is in your car, and present proof of a valid Airsoft defence (such as UKARA or site membership) to the officers.
